IRDAI moves to streamline health insurance with new reform-focused panel

In a move aimed at strengthening the health insurance ecosystem, India’s insurance regulator has taken steps to improve efficiency and policyholder experience.

Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India has set up a new committee to review and enhance private health insurance systems. The announcement was made on Tuesday, April 7, 2026.

The initiative focuses on making the process easier for policyholders, including smoother claims, better-designed insurance plans, and faster support during emergencies.

The committee will examine how hospitals and insurers coordinate with each other. It will also explore ways to ensure fair pricing and reduce fraudulent practices in the system.

Another key focus area is the use of digital solutions to improve overall efficiency and user experience. The panel is expected to suggest upgrades that make processes faster and more transparent.

In addition, the committee will look into creating a common framework or shared rulebook for both insurers and hospitals. This is aimed at improving coordination and reducing confusion for policyholders.

The regulator is also working toward strengthening the National Health Claims Exchange, with the goal of enabling wider coverage and a more connected system that benefits all stakeholders.

This move highlights the regulator’s efforts to build a more reliable, transparent, and user-friendly health insurance ecosystem in India.
