iPhone 16 tops global smartphone sales in 2025 despite newer launches

Even a year after its launch, Apple’s iPhone 16 has managed to outperform every other smartphone worldwide. According to a recent report by a research firm, the iPhone 16 emerged as the best-selling smartphone globally in 2025, holding its ground against both newer Android flagships and Apple’s own latest models.

The data shows that Apple and Samsung continued to dominate the market for the 4th consecutive year, together accounting for 19% of total global smartphone sales. Apple secured 7 spots in the global top 10 list, with the iPhone 16 leading the chart. Samsung occupied the remaining 3 positions.

This strong performance came even after Apple launched the iPhone 17 series in September 2025. While the newer lineup recorded impressive sales, the iPhone 16 continued to see steady demand across regions.

Why Apple kept the iPhone 16 relevant

Apple’s decision to keep selling the iPhone 16 played a key role in its success. In India, the device is still available at a starting price of Rs 69,900. Although the iPhone 17 series delivered 16% higher sales than the iPhone 16 in its first full quarter, many buyers continued to prefer the older model, citing better value for money.

The 17 brought upgrades such as a 120 Hz display and higher base storage, but these additions were not enough to shift demand entirely away from the 16.

Key reasons behind iPhone 16’s popularity

The iPhone 16 sits in a balanced price segment, offering a premium experience without the higher cost of Pro models or top-end Android flagships. Seasonal discounts, trade-in deals, and carrier offers made it even more attractive, especially in price-sensitive markets like India.

Powered by the A18 chip, the 16 continues to deliver smooth performance for everyday tasks, gaming, photography, and work applications. For most users, the performance difference between the iPhone 16 and newer models remains minimal.

Long-term software support also worked in Apple’s favour. The iPhone 16 is expected to receive iOS updates and security patches for several years, making it a reliable long-term investment.

The Apple ecosystem further strengthened its appeal. Services like iMessage, FaceTime, iCloud, AirPods, and Apple Watch integration continue to keep users loyal to the brand.

Strong lineup supports Apple’s lead

The broader Apple lineup also contributed to its market strength. The 16e, launched in early 2025 at Rs 59,900, helped attract new users. Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 Pro Max climbed to 4th place globally within 3.5 months of launch.

On the Android side, Samsung’s Galaxy A16 5G became the best-selling Android smartphone of the year, while the Galaxy S25 Ultra returned to the global top 10, driven largely by strong demand in Japan.
