The Maharashtra Cyber Department has uncovered a large international network connected to a fifty eight crore rupee digital arrest fraud case in Mumbai. Officials said the links extend to Hong Kong, China and Indonesia, revealing the global scale of the operation.
The case involves one of India’s biggest reported digital arrest scams. Between August nineteen and October eight this year, cyber criminals posed as officers from the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Enforcement Directorate and cheated a Mumbai based businessman of fifty eight crore rupees. The gang used intimidation to force the victim into a video call under the pretext of an official inquiry and then siphoned off money from his accounts.
Investigators found that the entire syndicate operated through cryptocurrency channels. The stolen funds were routed abroad through multiple crypto wallets. Officials also discovered that the gang relied on commission based bank accounts to move money as part of its operations.
The fraud came to light after the businessman filed a police complaint. During the probe, the cyber department learned that this was not an isolated case but part of a widespread international network that has been targeting Indian citizens for more than a year. Authorities estimate that similar scams using digital arrest tactics and cryptocurrency manipulation may have generated over two thousand crore rupees in total.
Digital arrest scams involve criminals pretending to be government or law enforcement officials. They use threatening audio or video calls to hold victims virtually captive and pressure them into transferring money.
Maharashtra Cyber, which serves as the nodal agency for cybersecurity and cyber investigations in the state, continues to probe the case and track the global links of the syndicate.
