Intel has filed a new patent that focuses on improving CPU performance using software rather than scaling up hardware. The innovation, called “Software Defined Supercore” or SDC, combines the power of two or more CPU cores to function as a single, more powerful core.
The method works by dividing a single thread’s instructions into smaller blocks, which are then executed in parallel across multiple cores. Each core processes a different part of the program, helping to maximise instructions per clock with minimal overhead. This not only boosts core performance but could also improve performance per watt, as the CPU can switch between normal and performance modes depending on workload.
According to the patent, this approach enhances single-threaded performance without increasing frequency or voltage, which typically leads to higher power consumption and heat. Traditionally, large cores running at higher frequencies have been used to boost performance, but this often comes with thermal challenges. Intel’s SDC could deliver better single-core performance while maintaining efficiency and managing thermals more effectively.
However, the technology is not without hurdles. Running a program in order while splitting tasks across multiple cores is highly complex. Intel says it has addressed this through techniques like Shadow Store Buffer, though challenges remain, including synchronisation, low-latency communication between cores and overall implementation.
While the concept looks promising, Intel has not confirmed how or when this technology will appear in its products. For now, SDC remains in the experimental stage, and the industry will have to wait to see if it can be successfully applied in real-world CPUs.
