Intel and World Wide Technology Bring Offline AI to Students in Guatemala

Intel, in collaboration with World Wide Technology (WWT), is bringing the power of artificial intelligence directly to students in Guatemala, particularly those in underserved areas who lack consistent internet access. This groundbreaking program is empowering education by providing cutting-edge offline AI capabilities, opening new avenues for personalized learning and skill development.

The core of this initiative involves the donation of Dell laptops featuring Intel® Coreâ„¢ Ultra processors to students at Esperanza Juvenil, a private nonprofit school located in Guatemala City. These laptops are not just standard devices; they are referred to as “AI PCs,” which include a Central Processing Unit (CPU), a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU), and a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU). This combination of hardware enables the laptops to perform complex AI tasks directly on the device, removing the necessity for an internet connection.

These AI PCs are pre-installed with an offline large language model (LLM) tutor created by World Wide Technology. This cutting-edge AI tutor provides personalized, portable learning experiences, specifically tailored for situations where internet access is inconsistent or unavailable.

Additionally, the AI tutor is crafted with a profound understanding of Guatemala’s cultural context, ensuring a more relevant and customized learning experience. Teachers also gain significant advantages, as they can review chat logs from the AI tutor to gather insights into student performance, interests, and learning behaviors. This information enables educators to develop more personalized lesson plans and provide targeted assistance.

“These are children who learn to overcome many challenges, who are eager to change their story and their family history through quality education,” said Susana Rios, director general of Esperanza Juvenil. Lucas Pinzon, the school’s executive director, added, “We firmly believe that a good education can open doors for them.”

This Intel initiative in Guatemala underscores the immense potential of on-device AI accelerators to bridge the digital divide. By enabling advanced AI features to run at the edge, it makes sophisticated technology accessible in remote locations and areas with limited infrastructure.

Intel and World Wide Technology are not stopping at Guatemala. They plan to expand these crucial donations to schools in other developing regions, including India, Africa, and South America. This commitment reflects a broader vision to democratize technology and foster innovation within the next generation of students worldwide, ensuring that lack of internet access does not become a barrier to quality education and future opportunities.

As Bharath Srivats, an AI product marketing engineer with Intel, aptly put it, “All of this power is now portable and can be brought on device – AI on the go.” This initiative showcases a powerful model for leveraging AI to create equitable educational opportunities and prepare students globally for an increasingly AI-driven future.
