Instagram has updated its live streaming policy

Instagram has rolled out a major update to its Live streaming feature, introducing new eligibility criteria for users. From now on, only accounts with at least 1,000 followers and set to public will be allowed to go Live. This marks a clear shift from the previous model where any user, regardless of their follower count or privacy settings, could access the Live option.

Users who do not meet these conditions will receive a message stating: “Your account is no longer eligible for Live. We changed the requirements to use this feature. Only public accounts with 1,000 followers or more will be able to create live videos.” This change aligns Instagram with other social media platforms, such as TikTok, that already require a similar follower threshold to unlock Live streaming.

While Instagram has not officially provided a reason for this update, several possible motivations have been suggested. By limiting Live to larger accounts, Instagram may be aiming to improve the quality and reliability of live video streams, reduce server load, and support monetisation efforts by favouring professional creators. This move also reflects a broader industry shift, where live streaming is increasingly positioned as a tool for business, branding, and influencer marketing rather than casual social interaction.

The decision has sparked frustration among small creators and everyday users. Many feel the update limits creative freedom and hurts community engagement. Users argue that Live was a valuable space for authentic content, niche interests, and spontaneous conversations. Some also fear the change will encourage artificial follower growth, such as buying fake followers, just to regain access to the feature.

For established creators, the update provides a more exclusive space to promote content and connect with followers. However, smaller accounts may now need to adjust their strategies, grow their audience, or turn to alternative methods of engagement. The update signals a clear move by Instagram to prioritise professional and monetised content, which could redefine how users interact on the platform.
