Instagram is testing a new feature that allows users to fine-tune their Reels and Explore feeds by adding or removing topics based on their interests. The announcement was made by Instagram head Adam Mosseri in a post on Threads, where he shared a screenshot of how the new controls will look. The feature is currently being tested with a small group of users.
Mosseri said, “Today we’re starting to test a way for you to tune your algorithm on Instagram by adding and removing topics based on your interests. We’re launching this feature on Reels first, with plans to expand to Explore soon.”
According to his post, the new feature will let people manually adjust their recommendations rather than relying only on Instagram’s automated suggestions. Users will be able to decide what kind of content they want to see more or less of, such as travel videos, tech updates, or lifestyle posts.
The goal of this feature is to give users more control over their Instagram experience. It is part of the platform’s recent efforts to make its recommendation system more transparent. In the past year, Instagram has introduced several updates that allow users to limit sensitive content, hide irrelevant suggested posts, and manage parental controls more effectively. However, Mosseri did not share details on which users are currently part of the test group or when the feature might become widely available.
He also hinted that Meta could bring a similar feature to Threads. This idea follows a trend where Threads users have been posting requests to “the algorithm” asking to be connected with others who share their interests. Mosseri called the new feature “a meaningful new way to shape what you see.”
In a separate update, Instagram has launched a “Watch History” feature to help users find Reels they have already viewed. Mosseri said the new tool makes it easier to rediscover Reels and allows users to sort them by date or account, viewing them from newest to oldest or vice versa.
