Hyderabad: A 52-year-old woman lost Rs 1.23 lakh while trying to buy a saree priced at Rs 1,799 from an Instagram seller. The cybercrime police in Hyderabad have opened an investigation into the incident.
The woman found a deceptive Instagram account named ‘Vastanzo9’ that was advertising sarees. After reaching out to the seller on WhatsApp, she made an initial UPI payment. The scammer then asked for more payments via a QR code, promising that her first payment would be refunded.
After sending additional funds, the Instagram fraudster requested that she share her screen to facilitate the refund. While doing so, several Google Pay payment requests were sent, which the woman inadvertently approved, leading to a total loss of Rs 1,23,796.
A cybercrime official noted that scammers are increasingly using fake Instagram accounts to lure online shoppers with attractive deals. Authorities have urged users to check for authentic reviews and official websites before making any purchases.
The official warned, “No legitimate seller will ask for extra payments after a purchase. Never grant fraudsters access to your screen or device to protect your accounts and sensitive information.”
