Scrolling through Instagram can sometimes feel frustrating when your feed no longer matches your interests. From wedding videos long after your big day to food reels that no longer suit your lifestyle, irrelevant content can quickly take over. To address this, Instagram introduced a new feature in November 2024 that allows users to reset the platform’s algorithm and start fresh with their recommendations.
The reset option gives users the ability to clear suggested content across the home feed, Reels and Explore, without creating a new account. It works like a digital clean up, helping users reshape what they see as their interests change. This move reflects Instagram’s broader aim to help people manage their online experience better and ensure their feed stays meaningful and engaging over time.
There are several reasons why users may want to use this feature. Interests naturally evolve and past searches or interactions may no longer be relevant. Some users may also want to reduce exposure to repetitive or distressing content, or simply break free from seeing the same accounts and themes again and again. While the feature was initially developed with teenagers in mind to support safer online experiences, it is useful for anyone looking to rediscover content that better aligns with their current preferences. As Instagram explains, they want “to give users new ways to shape their experience so that it reflects their passions and interests as they evolve.”
Resetting the algorithm is simple. Users need to go to their profile, tap the 3 line menu at the top right, scroll to What you see, select Content preferences and tap Reset suggested content. After reviewing the on screen steps, users can confirm the reset. Before final confirmation, Instagram also allows users to review the accounts they follow or adjust ad topics instead of doing a full reset. Once completed, recommendations begin afresh. Some familiar content may still appear, but users will also see new creators and topics, offering a more balanced and relevant Instagram experience.
