Instagram has officially rolled out its Map feature in India, offering users a new way to connect with friends and discover posts, reels, and stories tagged to specific locations. With this update, users can choose to share their last active location with selected friends while browsing an interactive map view of location-tagged content. Location sharing can be turned off at any time. First introduced globally in August, the feature is now available for Indian users.
Instagram Map Feature: Key Details
The Map allows users to explore content from friends and creators based on tagged locations. It can help users find nearby cafes, track travel updates from friends, or explore trending spots across a city. Instagram highlighted in a blog post, “No matter how you use the map, you and your friends have a new, lightweight way to connect with each other.”
Location Indicators
To make location-sharing clearer, Instagram added a persistent indicator at the top of the Map showing whether a user’s location is active or if device location services are turned off. Users will also see a reminder below their profile photo in the Notes tray if location sharing is disabled.
Instagram has clarified the difference between tagging a location and sharing a live location. Profile photos are no longer shown on tagged content in the Map view, and a reminder now explains that tagged content does not reveal live location. Additionally, when tagging a story, reel, or post, users can preview how it will appear on the Map before posting.
Location Privacy Controls
Users can adjust Map settings at any time, including turning location sharing on or off and selecting which friends can view their location. For privacy, sharing is limited to mutual followers. When enabled, a user’s location updates each time they open Instagram and disappears after 24 hours unless the app is reopened. Location-sharing status is displayed using three icons:
- Blue arrow: Location sharing is enabled
- Red dot: Location sharing is off
- Orange triangle: Location permissions need to be granted
