Instagram introduces Watch History feature for previously watched Reels

Instagram has rolled out a new “Watch History” feature, allowing users to revisit Reels they have previously watched. The update, announced on Friday, brings Instagram closer to rival TikTok, which has offered a similar feature for several years.

The new feature helps users find videos they may not have saved. For example, if you are watching an interesting Reel and get interrupted by a call, accidentally close the app, or get distracted, you can now return to your Watch History to locate the video.

“Have you ever tried to get back to a reel that you’d seen on Instagram and you just can’t find it?” Instagram head Adam Mosseri said. “Well, there is a new feature that should help. If you go to ‘Profile’ and under ‘Settings,’ under ‘Your Activity,’ there’s Watch History now, so you can see every reel that you’ve ever watched.”

Users can sort their Watch History by date, past week or month, or a custom date range. Additionally, Reels can be removed from the history if desired. Instagram also allows sorting in chronological or reverse chronological order, or by author, offering more flexibility than TikTok.

The feature was highly requested by users, who previously relied on workarounds like downloading their data to recover lost videos. Watch History simplifies this process, making it easier to find Reels and enhancing the overall user experience.

Since launching Reels as a TikTok-style short-form video platform, Instagram has been steadily adding features similar to those on TikTok. Recent updates include the ability for creators to link multiple Reels in a series and support for Picture-in-Picture viewing.
