Instagram has rolled out a new AI driven feature that finally lets users decide what kind of Reels they want to watch, breaking away from the usual algorithm controlled experience. The platform announced that people will now be able to customise the Reels tab by choosing the topics they want to see more or less of.
To access this update, users can tap a new icon displayed as two lines with hearts in the upper right corner while scrolling through Reels. This opens a page that highlights a summary of topics Instagram believes match the user’s interests. These topics are based on recent activity including what users like, watch, share or skip.
On this summary screen, users can manually search and select topics they prefer or wish to avoid. The app will then adjust recommendations according to these choices. This feature replaces the earlier system where users had little clarity about why certain videos appeared on their feed.
Instagram is also allowing users to showcase their Reels interests directly on their Stories. After selecting the preferred topics, users can share them as a Story to give followers a glimpse into the type of Reels they enjoy.
The company has stated that this update is only the beginning. Similar content controls are expected to expand to the Explore tab and other areas of the app in the future.
At the moment, this AI powered customisation is available only to users in the United States. A wider rollout is planned soon for global English speaking audiences.
