Instagram rolls out long-awaited comment edit option worldwide

In a move aimed at improving user experience, Instagram has started rolling out a long-awaited feature that allows users to edit their comments after posting.

The Meta-owned platform announced on Friday that the update is being released globally. With this feature, users can make quick changes to their comments, helping fix typos or improve clarity. While editing posts has been available for years, comments could not be changed until now.

As per the update, users can edit their comments within 15 minutes of posting. There is no limit on how many times a comment can be edited during this period, allowing multiple corrections if needed.

To use this feature, users can tap on the new Edit option that appears below a posted comment. After selecting it, a pop-up window opens where the text can be modified before saving the updated version.

However, the feature comes with certain restrictions. Only the text in a comment can be edited. If a comment includes both text and an image, only the written part can be changed, not the image.

Edited comments will display a grey “edited” label to show that changes have been made. Instagram does not offer a version history, meaning other users cannot see the original comment once it has been edited.

The feature arrives after a long delay. Instagram introduced editable captions for posts in 2014, but comment editing was not available for over a decade. In comparison, X (formerly Twitter) started testing editable posts and comments in 2022, though access depends on availability and subscription tiers.
