The CID (Crime) has apprehended seven individuals connected to a fraud scheme involving an Instagram gaming application.
Authorities confiscated ₹2 crore from 17 separate bank accounts. The State Cyber Crime Cell of CID (Crime) dismantled a gang that was enticing users on Instagram with offers of in-game coins for a gaming app.
Officers received information about extensive fraud being carried out using multiple active mobile numbers in Gujarat.
An investigation into various complaints led to the discovery of an account at Banaskantha Mercantile Co-operative Bank in Palanpur.
This prompted the formation of several teams to delve deeper, revealing alarming details. It was found that some individuals in Palanpur were creating gaming app IDs on Instagram and promising coins for gameplay.
As these coins were tied to bank transactions, recipients were later coerced with threats of false criminal charges. The accused exploited this to extort large sums from victims under the guise of ‘settlements’.
Subsequently, police conducted a raid at a residence in Nidhi Bungalows, Palanpur, arresting Shailesh Chaudhary, Sendha Chaudhary, Jitendra Chaudhary, Suresh Chaudhary, Rahul Chaudhary, and Narsinh Chaudhary.
During the operation, 13 mobile phones, 14 bank passbooks, a cheque book, debit and credit cards, and cash were seized. The investigation is ongoing.
