Instagram is working on a new feature called Picks that aims to help users connect over common interests. The Meta owned platform confirmed that Picks is currently an internal prototype and is not being tested publicly.
The feature was first discovered by a well known reverse engineer who often finds unreleased tools in development. Screenshots suggest that users will be able to choose their favourite movies, books, TV shows, games, and music as their Picks. Instagram will then highlight overlaps with friends who have selected the same items.
Although Instagram has not shared full details, the platform appears to view Picks as a way to encourage more personal connections and spark conversations based on shared hobbies and tastes.
Earlier this year, Instagram head Adam Mosseri said the social network would focus on creativity and connection in 2025. “To help people connect with friends over the things they discover on Instagram, we’re going to double down on messaging, make consuming content more interactive and social, and explore new ways to connect with friends,” Mosseri said in a January post.
However, not all users may be excited about the new feature. Some have already expressed frustration over Instagram adding more tools to an app they feel is becoming overcrowded. The platform faced similar criticism following the launch of Instagram Map, with many saying they never wanted it.
As with many features still in development, it remains uncertain when or if Picks will be officially rolled out to users.
