Instagram has officially hit 3 billion monthly active users, a milestone announced by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Wednesday.
“What an incredible community we’ve built here,” Zuckerberg shared on his Instagram channel as the app joined Facebook and WhatsApp in surpassing the 3 billion user mark this year.
This achievement comes nearly two years after Instagram last disclosed its user numbers. In October 2022, Zuckerberg revealed during an earnings call that the platform had crossed 2 billion monthly users.
Instagram, acquired by Meta in 2012 for $1 billion, has grown into one of the company’s most influential apps. The latest figure underscores its importance in Meta’s wider ecosystem of platforms.
Meta had earlier announced in April 2024 that it would stop disclosing monthly and daily active user numbers for Facebook and its other apps each quarter. Instead, the company now reports the overall number of daily active people across its family of apps. In July, Meta said that figure had reached 3.48 billion, beating analyst expectations of 3.45 billion.
Facebook and WhatsApp had already crossed the 3 billion monthly active user milestone earlier this year. In January, Zuckerberg said Facebook had “more than 3 billion monthly actives,” and in April he confirmed that WhatsApp also had “more than 3 billion monthly actives.”
With Instagram joining the list, Meta now has three platforms each with more than 3 billion monthly users, further cementing its dominance in the global social media landscape.
