An unusual discovery along the Karnataka coast has drawn the attention of local residents and security agencies.
A migratory seagull fitted with a GPS tracking device was found injured on Tuesday along the Karwar coastline in Uttara Kannada district. The bird was spotted by the Coastal Marine Police Cell at Rabindranath Tagore Beach in Karwar and was later handed over to the forest department wing for further care and examination.
During the inspection, officials noticed that the seagull had a GPS tracker tied to its body. The device included an electronic unit along with a small solar panel. An email address was also found attached to the tracker, accompanied by a message requesting anyone who finds the bird to contact the provided ID.
Police said the email address is linked to the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which identifies itself as a Research Centre for Eco-Environmental Sciences. Authorities are now attempting to contact the mentioned email ID to seek clarification regarding the purpose of the tracking device.
The injured bird was examined by officials after being taken into custody. Security agencies have begun reviewing the incident due to the presence of foreign linked device on the migratory bird.
“Several angles are being examined, including whether the bird was part of a scientific research project to study migratory patterns,” Uttara Kannada Superintendent of Police Deepan MN said.
The incident has gained wider attention because of Karwar’s strategic importance. The coastal town hosts one of India’s most critical naval bases, making any unusual activity in the area a matter of heightened scrutiny.
Officials have not drawn any conclusions so far and said further clarity is expected once communication is established with the institution linked to the tracking device.
