Indonesia reaches agreement with India to procure BrahMos missile system

Indonesia has entered into an agreement with India to procure the BrahMos missile system, according to a statement by the country’s defence ministry spokesperson.

Rico Ricardo Sirait confirmed that the deal forms part of Indonesia’s broader plan to modernise its military capabilities, particularly in the maritime defence sector.

The missile system is produced by BrahMos Aerospace, a joint venture between the governments of India and Russia.

In 2023, BrahMos Aerospace had stated that it was in advanced discussions with Indonesia regarding a potential deal valued between $200 million and $350 million. However, Sirait declined to confirm the exact value of the agreement.

He said the procurement agreement is “part of the modernisation of military hardware and defence capabilities, especially in the maritime sector.”

The development marks another step in India’s efforts to expand exports of its defence technology to international partners.

BrahMos Aerospace secured its first foreign contract in 2022 when it signed a deal to supply the missile system to Philippines.

At the time of the announcement, both BrahMos Aerospace and India’s Ministry of Defence had not immediately responded to requests for additional comments regarding the agreement.
