The announcement was made on March 31, 2026, as the airline prepares for its next phase of expansion. Walsh, currently Director General of the International Air Transport Association, will step down on July 31, 2026, and is expected to take charge by August 3.
Walsh brings extensive global experience. He has served as Chief Executive Officer of British Airways and International Airlines Group, which operates Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia, Level, and Vueling. He began his career as a pilot and later held leadership roles, including Chief Operating Officer and Chief Executive Officer at Aer Lingus from 2000 to 2005, before leading British Airways from 2005 to 2011 and IAG from 2011 to 2020.
In his new role, Walsh will oversee overall management and strategic direction, focusing on operational performance, network and commercial strategy, and customer experience.
“What stands out most to me are its people, their passion, professionalism, and commitment. The aviation landscape is evolving rapidly, and IndiGo is extremely well-positioned to be at the forefront of this change,” he said.
“I look forward to partnering with colleagues across the organisation to build a culture of excellence, innovation, collaboration, and sustainable value for all stakeholders.”
Walsh will succeed Pieter Elbers, who resigned in March. He takes charge at a challenging time, with rising operating costs, including jet fuel prices, airspace closures affecting routes, and the need to rebuild passenger trust after recent disruptions.
The airline faced regulatory action following widespread flight disruptions between December 3 and 5, 2025, when 2,507 cancellations and 1,852 delays impacted over 3 lakh passengers. After an inquiry by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, the airline was fined ₹22.20 crore, and several senior officials, including Elbers, received warnings.
After Elbers’ exit, Managing Director and co-founder Rahul Bhatia handled interim operations. Chairman Vikram Singh Mehta said Walsh’s experience will support future growth, while Bhatia highlighted his global perspective and operational expertise.
Currently, IndiGo holds the highest domestic market share. The airline operates over 400 aircraft, runs around 2,200 daily flights, and connects more than 95 domestic and 40 international destinations, serving 124 million customers in CY25.
