India’s Semiconductor Manufacturing Demand Set to Surge Amid Digital Expansion

India is witnessing a sharp rise in demand for semiconductor manufacturing, driven by rapid digitization, growing electronics consumption, and government-backed initiatives to build a resilient supply chain.

According to industry experts, the country’s semiconductor demand is expected to exceed $110 billion by 2030, with applications spanning automotive, telecommunications, consumer electronics, defense, and industrial automation.

“This is not just about technology—it’s about self-reliance and economic growth,” said Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister for Electronics and IT. “India’s digital economy is expanding fast, and semiconductors are the backbone of this transformation.”

The government’s Semicon India program, which includes financial incentives for setting up fabs and OSAT units, is already attracting major players like Micron, Tata Electronics, and others. These developments are aligned with the country’s broader goal of becoming a global semiconductor manufacturing hub.

Industry stakeholders stress the importance of ecosystem development—spanning R&D, skilling, and infrastructure—to support long-term growth. “India must focus on creating a comprehensive semiconductor value chain, not just isolated facilities,” noted Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and IT.

India’s strategic push also involves partnerships with global tech firms and semiconductor leaders from the U.S., Japan, and Taiwan. These alliances are crucial for knowledge transfer, technology access, and global supply chain integration.

As geopolitical tensions and supply chain vulnerabilities drive countries to localize chip production, India is positioning itself as a reliable, innovation-driven alternative in the global semiconductor space.
