India’s Largest Sports Complex Inaugurated in Ahmedabad

Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated India’s largest and most advanced sports complex on September 16, 2025, in Naranpura, Ahmedabad. Built at a cost of ₹825 crore, the facility features world-class aquatic arenas, modern indoor and outdoor sports arenas, athlete housing, and dedicated training centers.

The Naranpura Sports Complex is designed to meet international standards and is expected to host major competitions, including the Commonwealth Games. “This is not only the largest sports complex in India, but it is also the most modern in the world,” said Amit Shah during the inauguration.

The complex supports the government’s vision of making India a leading sports nation by 2047, the year of the country’s 100th independence anniversary. Amit Shah highlighted Ahmedabad’s potential to emerge as a sports hub in Asia, producing top athletes and hosting global tournaments.

India’s sports budget has increased nearly threefold over the past decade, reflecting sustained investment in infrastructure, athlete development, and international exposure. Funding initiatives such as the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) and Khelo India are enabling high-performance training and grassroots sports development.

The new sports complex is part of a broader shift in India’s sports policy, which focuses on early talent identification, science-backed training programs, and public-private partnerships in infrastructure, education, and athlete support. The Naranpura facility is expected to serve as a model for other cities and regions aiming to strengthen their sporting ecosystems.

With its world-class facilities, athlete housing, and training resources, the Ahmedabad complex is set to elevate India’s position in international sports and contribute to nurturing future champions.
