Indian Railways enhances safety with a new AI-powered Machine Vision Based Inspection System (MVIS)

In a major step towards boosting safety and operational efficiency, Indian Railways has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) to introduce a Machine Vision Based Inspection System (MVIS). This advanced system, powered by artificial intelligence and machine learning, is expected to transform how trains are inspected and maintained.

MVIS is designed to be installed alongside railway tracks and uses high-resolution cameras to scan the undercarriage of trains as they move. The system can automatically detect loose, hanging, or missing parts in real-time. If any fault is identified, it immediately sends alerts, allowing quick action to prevent accidents or delays, as per an official statement.

The MoU was signed at Rail Bhawan by Sumit Kumar, Director (Project and Development) of the Railway Board, and Jawahar Lal, General Manager (Mechanical) of DFCCIL. As part of the agreement, DFCCIL will handle the procurement, installation, testing, and commissioning of four MVIS units. This marks the first time such a technology is being introduced in Indian Railways on this scale.

The new system is expected to reduce dependence on manual inspections, which are time-consuming and less efficient. By switching to automated inspections, the railways aim to improve safety standards and reduce service interruptions.

“This initiative also aligns with IR’s broader objective of introducing modern, intelligent systems to the railway ecosystem. The signing of this MoU is poised to open new avenues for digital transformation in rail safety in building a future-ready rail infrastructure,” the ministry stated.

Alongside this technology rollout, Indian Railways is also working to strengthen its workforce. In the first quarter of the 2025–26 financial year, over 9,000 appointment letters have already been issued. The organisation has plans to recruit more than 50,000 people by the end of the year.

Since November 2024, the Railway Recruitment Boards have been conducting Computer-Based Tests (CBTs) across the country. So far, more than 1.86 crore candidates have appeared in seven separate recruitment drives, showing the scale and reach of the hiring process.

This combination of advanced technology and workforce expansion shows Indian Railways’ push towards a safer, smarter, and more efficient future.
