Indian IT giants bet big on AI

India’s top IT companies are quickly reshaping themselves as AI-focused organisations, concentrating on high-margin AI applications and integration, while avoiding the high-risk, expensive task of building foundational AI models.

A close look at the FY25 annual reports of industry giants like TCS, Infosys, Wipro, and Tech Mahindra shows that these companies are not competing to create the next breakthrough in AI. Instead, they are positioning themselves as leading AI integrators in the global market.

This shift from broad digital transformation to a sharper AI focus is clear from the themes of their annual reports. TCS describes its approach as “The Perpetually Adaptive Enterprise,” driven by an “AI-First approach.”

Infosys has taken an even clearer stance with its theme “AI Your Enterprise,” while Wipro highlights its role in “Helping Clients Build AI-Powered Future-Ready Businesses.” Tech Mahindra has chosen the tagline “AI Delivered Right.”

A key part of this strategy is heavy investment in people and upskilling employees. TCS reported that over 1 lakh employees have developed “higher order skills in AI/ML and GenAI.” Infosys shared that more than 2.7 lakh of its staff are now “AI-Aware.” Similar efforts are underway at Wipro and Tech Mahindra.

Infosys Chairman Nandan Nilekani highlighted how AI brings both opportunities and uncertainty. He stressed the importance of modernising legacy systems and building a strong data architecture so that all company data can be effectively used by AI. He also urged companies to set up an AI foundry and an AI factory to drive both innovation and scale.

Mahindra Group Chairman Anand G Mahindra compared AI to “a gifted child prodigy born and brought up in a library.” He explained, “It has access to all the knowledge in the world. It absorbs everything — information, fact, fiction, truth, untruth, every pattern of human behaviour. Used well, it can create extraordinary value, particularly for businesses like TechM.”

The global AI market is expected to grow sharply, reaching around USD 1.3 trillion in the next decade, as per industry estimates.

Rather than building their own large language models (LLMs) to rival OpenAI or Google, Indian IT majors are strengthening partnerships with global tech giants like Microsoft, Google, AWS, and chipmakers such as Nvidia to access cutting-edge AI models and infrastructure.

They are also setting up dedicated spaces for AI innovation. TCS is building AI Centres of Excellence and AI Labs, while Infosys is creating its AI foundry to allow clients to safely test AI applications.

The belief is that as AI becomes a utility, the real long-term value will lie with those who can expertly integrate it across businesses.

TCS Chairman N Chandrasekaran called generative AI “a civilisational shift” that will positively transform industries. He said the USD 30 billion IT services company plans to create a “large pool” of AI agents to work alongside humans under a “human AI” model.

Meanwhile, Wipro announced changes within its Global Business Lines to better meet client needs in AI, cloud, and digital transformation. “This realignment will allow us to serve our clients better, enabling us to deliver tailored, high-impact transformation,” said Wipro CEO and MD Srini Pallia.
