Indian government has launched a new digital address system called DIGIPIN

With the goal of facilitating accurate location identification throughout the nation, the Indian government has introduced a new digital address system known as DIGIPIN.

For e-commerce behemoths like Amazon and Flipkart, DIGIPIN is anticipated to simplify services like last-mile deliveries. Additionally, as DIGIPIN promises to provide a degree of geographic precision that has been absent in India thus far, it might help police, ambulance, and fire services improve their emergency response times.

“The DIGIPIN will lead to secure and efficient communication between the citizens and government and private entities. It is an open-source, interoperable, geo-coded and grid-based digital address system,” the government said in a press release.

“DIGIPIN simplifies address management by providing precise location-based identification, especially in areas with unstructured or changing addresses. It also helps in areas where no clear address exists, such as rural regions, forests, and oceans,” India Post said in a post on X.

Here is all you need to know about the distinctive digital ID and how to create a DIGIPIN for your house as the government launches it statewide.

What is DIGIPIN?

A unique ten-character alphanumeric code known as DIGIPIN may be created for each property on Indian soil that is around 4 by 4 square meters. This implies that distinct DIGIPINs may be created for almost any kind of property, including those in rural and urban regions as well as various marine zones. The Indian Express office building in Noida, for instance, has the DIGIPIN 39J-53M-TJF9.

The Department of Posts, in partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad and the National Remote Sensing Center, which operates under the auspices of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), has created the underlying technology of DIGIPIN.

The government has emphasized that DIGIPIN is an interoperable, open-source solution that prioritizes privacy. Since each DIGIPIN is encoded with the property’s geographic coordinates, no personal data is stored there.

According to India Post, the equipment used to record the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) position may determine how accurate the DIGIPIN is.

The conventional six-digit PIN system will not be replaced by the DIGIPIN. Rather, it is meant to serve as an additional layer of accuracy that is added to already-existing postal addresses.

How to check your DIGIPIN?

To find out the DIGIPIN for your home or any other location, follow these steps:

Go to dac.indiapost.gov.in/mydigipin/home. This is the dedicated ‘Know Your DIGIPIN’ portal launched by the Department of Posts for people to easily generate their unique code.

– Ensure that your web browser has access to your location. If location is turned off, you may need to enable it in the browser settings.

– If a pop-up appears asking for location access, click on Allow.

– Tap ‘I Consent’ if you agree to the terms of the DIGIPIN privacy policy.

– You will be able to see the unique alphanumeric code at the bottom right corner of the screen.

By providing the geographic coordinates, you may also get the DIGIPIN for any other site, and vice versa.
