Indian gov rejects NYT report alleging HAL’s involvement in transferring sensitive British technology to Russia

Indian government has characterized a New York Times article that claimed that a state-owned Indian company, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, facilitated the transfer of sensitive British technology and equipment from a Reform UK party donor to the Russian arms agency Rosoboronexport as false and deceptive.

The HR Smith group, which gave £1,00,000 (just under $1,30,000) to Reform UK last year, reportedly gave the Indian firm equipment. Within days, the company transferred components to Russia using the same identifying product numbers.

According to government officials who spoke on condition of anonymity, the study attempted to frame issues and twist data to fit a political narrative, and it was factually inaccurate and deceptive.

“The Indian entity mentioned in the report has scrupulously followed all its international obligations on strategic trade controls and end-user commitments. India’s robust legal and regulatory framework on strategic trade continues to guide overseas commercial ventures by its companies,” said an official.

“We expect reputed media outlets to undertake basic due diligence while publishing such reports, which obviously was overlooked in the instant case,” added the official.

According to the article, American and British officials have identified the components as essential to Russia’s war effort in Ukraine and they have both military and civilian applications. “Officials have urged exporters to carry out detailed checks to ensure that their clients are not redirecting restricted equipment to Moscow,” it said.
