India Rises Among Top Six Nations in Global 6G Patent Race, Eyes $1 Trillion Economic Boost

India has secured a prestigious place among the world’s top six countries for 6G patent filings, announced Union Minister of State for Telecom, Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, at the recent BHARAT 6G 2025 conference. This achievement underscores the nation’s accelerating journey toward future wireless technology leadership.

With over 111 research initiatives receiving generous funding amounting to ₹300 crore, India’s innovation engine is powering ahead. “Over 111 research projects have been funded with the sanction amount of Rs 300 crore and India now ranks among the top six nations globally in 6G patent filings. We have a vast amount of talent pool and we have enough time. There is no reason for us not to lead in 6G,” Pemmasani emphasized, highlighting the country’s confidence and capability.

6G promises to revolutionize connectivity by harnessing terahertz frequency bands to deliver blazing data speeds up to one terabit per second — a hundred times faster than existing 5G networks. This leap in speed and capacity is poised to reshape industries, creating new sectors and transforming old ones. The Minister added, “6G will create entirely new industries and revolutionize existing ones, potentially adding $1 trillion to India’s economy by 2035. Indigenous 6G development will also ensure that our secure communications are developed within India and secure.”

Central to this vision is the Bharat 6G Mission, a government initiative launched in 2021. The mission’s first phase, spanning 2023 to 2025, focuses on intensive research and development, while the subsequent phase (2025 to 2030) will drive the deployment of 6G infrastructure. The Department of Telecommunications has formed the Technology Innovation Group on 6G (TIG-6G), uniting industry leaders, academia, and researchers to craft a roadmap for 6G’s future in India.

Six specialized task forces are diligently working on critical aspects such as spectrum management, device ecosystems, multi-platform networks, funding strategies, and international standards. The initiative champions affordability, scalability, and accessibility, aiming for a “6G ecosystem that is made in India, made for the world, secure by design and transformative in impact,” as Pemmasani declared.

The mission is overseen by a high-level council that steers progress and ensures India’s voice remains influential in global telecom standards. The upcoming Bharat 6G Alliance is expected to further strengthen collaboration among Indian industries, researchers, and educational institutions, fostering a vibrant innovation ecosystem.

India’s bold strides in 6G mark a transformative chapter in the nation’s technological saga, blending indigenous brilliance with a vision to impact the world.
