India is set to introduce its first hydrogen-powered train in May, a groundbreaking move towards sustainable railway technology. This innovative train will feature a 1,200-horsepower (hp) hydrogen engine, making it the most powerful hydrogen train in the world, outpacing similar trains globally that usually operate at 600 or 800 hp.
Hydrogen-powered trains represent a promising future for green transportation, offering a cleaner alternative to traditional diesel-powered engines. India’s upcoming hydrogen train will be a testament to the country’s growing expertise in both advanced railway engineering and sustainable transport solutions.
In addition to the hydrogen-powered train, India is also making significant progress in the development of high-power locomotives. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the creation of a remarkable 9,000-horsepower locomotive in Dahod, Gujarat, which is said to be as advanced as a data center rather than a conventional locomotive.
These technological advancements in locomotives underscore India’s ambition to become a major player in global railway manufacturing and exporting. Vaishnaw expressed confidence that India could replicate its successes in electronics, telecom, and defense by strengthening its railway manufacturing sector.
