India to Launch Its Own Space Station by 2035: ISRO Chairman

India’s space ambitions have taken a bold leap forward as ISRO Chairman Dr. V. Narayanan announced two major milestones for the country’s future in space exploration. Speaking at a convocation ceremony at the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design and Manufacturing, he shared that India will build its own space station by 2035 and independently send an astronaut to the Moon and back by 2040.

Dr. Narayanan stated, “By 2035, we are going to build our own space station, and by 2040 we are going to send our human being—our brother or sister—to the moon.”

The proposed space station will be fully developed and operated by India, enabling astronauts to live and work in space for extended durations. The lunar mission, set for 2040, aims to achieve this feat with entirely indigenous technology including launch vehicles and spacecraft.

Dr. Narayanan also reflected on India’s journey from humble beginnings, recalling how rockets were once transported on bicycles. He said, “What began as a humble effort, where rockets were transported on bicycles, has now witnessed phenomenal growth. Today, the entire world is watching us.”

Highlighting ISRO’s recent achievements, he pointed to several successful missions:

Aditya Mission, which made India one of only four nations to send a satellite to study the Sun.

A docking demonstration, successfully joining spacecraft in orbit.

Upcoming plans for a mission to orbit Venus, exploring the planet’s extreme environment.

He emphasized that these efforts align with the national vision of “Viksit Bharat” or a developed India by 2047, as outlined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

During the ceremony, 206 students were awarded degrees, including 183 in B.Tech., 19 in M.Tech., and 4 PhDs. Dr. Narayanan’s message to them was clear: the sky is no longer the limit for India.
