The government is preparing to establish the Artificial Intelligence Governance Group (AIGG) and the Technology Policy and Ethics Committee (TPEC) by December to create a structured and unified approach to regulating artificial intelligence, ensuring safety and promoting innovation across India, according to a report by a common publication.
The AIGG will include representatives from several key ministries, such as the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of External Affairs, the telecommunications ministry, and the Ministry of Science and Technology.
It will also feature members from top regulatory bodies, including the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi), the Competition Commission of India (CCI), and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai).
Additionally, organisations such as NITI Aayog, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), and the University Grants Commission (UGC) will participate in the group, ensuring representation from finance, healthcare, education, and innovation sectors.
The TPEC will work alongside AIGG to develop strategies and ensure effective implementation of AI policies. Its primary role will be to make sure that India’s AI governance framework remains technically robust and ethically responsible.
According to the report, MeitY will soon appoint members to the TPEC. The committee will consist of experts in artificial intelligence research, machine learning, data science, engineering, law, public policy, and cybercrime, along with former officials from relevant fields.
Industry body Nasscom has welcomed this move, saying the next step should be to establish regulatory sandboxes and testing tools under the AIGG and TPEC. These frameworks will allow developers and companies to test AI systems in controlled environments while ensuring compliance with national standards.
The creation of these two bodies highlights India’s growing focus on building a responsible AI ecosystem that balances innovation with safety and ethical governance.
