India sets 3 world records in cryogenic engine technology says ISRO chief

India has already set three world records and created three different kinds of cryogenic engine technology, despite Western countries having previously refused it access, ISRO Chairman Dr. V Narayanan stated on Monday.

Dr. Narayanan, who was speaking at the opening of a new research facility at IIT Madras, emphasized that India is one of only six countries having this technology, and that one of its engines is human-rated.

“From engine development to test flight, we mastered the process in just 28 months—compared to the 42 months and 18 years taken by other countries. India also successfully conducted a test flight within just 34 days,” he stated.

Cryogenic engines power the third stage of India’s GSLV and LVM launch vehicles. “This technology was once denied to India, but today, we have developed three different cryogenic engines, including a human-rated one. We succeeded on our third attempt,” said Dr Narayanan, who also serves as the Secretary of the Department of Space.

He highlighted the “Shri S Ramakrishnan Centre of Excellence in Fluid and Thermal Science Research’s” contribution to the Atmanirbhar Bharat project by encouraging independence in cutting-edge space technologies during its opening.

The center will assist recruit talent from around the world, get research funding, and establish India as a leader in thermal science research for space applications, he added. The building will be a major center for fluid dynamics, cooling systems, and heat transfer research.

An outstanding aircraft engineer and IIT Madras alumni was S Ramakrishnan. He held important leadership positions at LPSC and VSSC and was the Project Director for PSLV and GSLV Mk-3.
