India’s second largest space station will be built in Gujarat

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is building the country’s second-largest space station in Gujarat. The work for this ambitious project is moving ahead quickly and is expected to cost ₹10,000 crore, according to ISRO’s Space Applications Centre (SAC) Director Nilesh Desai. He shared this information during an exclusive interview with CNBC Awaaz.

In line with the Centre’s initiatives, the Gujarat government has also announced a Space Mission Policy, which is expected to boost the state’s space sector development.

The upcoming space station will be set up between Diu and Veraval in Gujarat. Desai confirmed that rockets like SALV and PSLV will be launched from this new space station.

He also pointed out that Gujarat’s location, being closer to the equator, gives it a strategic advantage for space launches.

At present, ISRO is focusing 70% of its efforts on building communication, navigation, and remote sensing systems, Desai added.

ISRO is also working on several key missions that are expected to be completed by 2026. These include Chandrayaan-5, the country’s human spaceflight mission Gaganyaan, and the Venus Orbiter Mission.

Currently, India’s largest space station is located in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.

Meanwhile, India is also preparing to launch the first satellite of its 52-satellite surveillance constellation by April 2026. As reported by The Times of India, the government has directed ISRO and three private companies to speed up the production and deployment of all 52 satellites by the end of 2029.

Out of these, ISRO will be responsible for building and launching 31 satellites. The remaining satellites will be produced by the three private firms working on the project.
