India enforces new rules to limit personal data collection by global tech firms

India has begun implementing new privacy rules that require major technology companies to reduce how much personal data they collect and give users greater control over their information. The rules took effect on Friday and mark a major step in enforcing the Digital Personal Data Protection law passed in 2023.

Under the new framework, companies can only gather data that is essential for a clearly defined purpose. They must also explain why the data is being collected, give users the option to decline and inform them if their data is exposed in a breach. These requirements mirror the goals of the European Union’s GDPR and come as countries worldwide move to tighten data protection amid rapid AI adoption.

India is one of the biggest markets for global AI services, with nearly a billion people online. Popular tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google Gemini rely heavily on Indian users. Dhruv Garg from a policy research group said, “This marks the most significant operational step in India’s new privacy regime since the DPDP Act 2023 came into force.”

The government is also preparing additional rules for the broader digital ecosystem. These include higher compliance standards for AI companies and social media platforms. While the data protection law was approved last year, the formal notification of these rules now puts the legislation into active enforcement.
