India ranks 3rd globally in AI competitiveness, ahead of major economies

A new global assessment has placed India among the top countries shaping the future of artificial intelligence. The latest Global AI Vibrancy Tool by Stanford University shows India as the world’s 3rd most competitive nation in artificial intelligence, highlighting the country’s rapid progress in technology and innovation.

The ranking underlines how India’s expanding tech ecosystem and strong talent base are strengthening its position in the global AI race. A chart published by a digital platform, based on Stanford’s data, shows the United States leading with an AI vibrancy score of 78.6. China follows in 2nd place with a score of 36.95, while India secures the 3rd spot with a score of 21.59.

India’s position places it ahead of several advanced economies, including South Korea, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Japan, Canada, Germany and France.

Stanford’s AI Vibrancy Tool combines multiple indicators into a single score to assess how mature and competitive a country’s AI ecosystem is. These indicators include research and development, talent availability, investment and economic impact, infrastructure, public opinion, and policy and governance. The tool is designed to track where AI innovation and talent are growing and how strongly governments are supporting artificial intelligence.

The data also highlights the role of income levels in AI competitiveness. High income countries dominate the top of the ranking, while upper middle income countries such as China and Brazil are steadily narrowing the gap.

India stands out among lower middle income countries as the only nation in this category to rank so high globally, reinforcing its unique position in the AI landscape.

The report shows that different countries lead in different areas. The United States tops research and development, responsible AI, economy, policy and governance, and infrastructure. China performs strongly in talent, economy and infrastructure. India features among the top 3 in talent, reflecting its large and skilled workforce in technology and engineering.

The report also raises a concern that the widening gap in AI competitiveness could deepen global inequality if access to AI growth remains uneven. For India, however, the ranking offers a strong positive signal, reflecting rising AI investments, growing research output, a strong startup ecosystem, and a vast pool of engineers and developers.
