India Post Combines Registered Post With Speed Post From September 1

India Post has announced that its Registered Post service will merge with Speed Post for all domestic mail starting from September 1, 2025. The Department of Posts issued a circular on July 2, 2025, stating that the change is aimed at making the service more efficient and to “deliver greater customer convenience by consolidating similar services under a unified framework.”

From September 1, the label of Registered Post will no longer exist for domestic deliveries. Instead, all such items will be processed as Speed Post. Registered Post was traditionally used for secure and accountable deliveries, offering features such as proof of delivery and acknowledgement due. India Post has clarified that these features will continue to be available but only as paid, value added services within Speed Post.

A major difference is that proof of delivery, including the recipient’s signature, which was earlier included in Registered Post, will now become optional. Customers who require it must request the service at the time of booking and pay the additional ₹10 charge per article along with the Speed Post tariff. Addressee specific delivery will also be offered as an extra service.

Tracking under Speed Post is considered more advanced than Registered Post. It provides real time online tracking, SMS alerts, and quicker query resolution. With the merger, customers will now benefit from improved visibility and reliability of their consignments.

For individuals and businesses that have been using Registered Post, the process is straightforward. They must now book items through Speed Post and add specific services like proof of delivery if needed. It is recommended that customers confirm the exact requirements and charges with their local post office.

Government departments, courts, and legal offices that relied on Registered Post with Acknowledgement Due will also need to adapt to this change. The Department of Posts has instructed all Directorates and Divisions to update their manuals, forms, and administrative processes in line with the new system.

The merger marks a significant step in modernising India Post’s mail services, combining the secure features of Registered Post with the faster delivery and stronger tracking of Speed Post.
