India partners with Meta to launch a consumer awareness campaign

On Tuesday, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs said that it will be collaborating with the tech company Meta to introduce a consumer awareness campaign dubbed “Be an Empowered Consumer” that will improve online customers’ digital literacy and safety.

According to an official announcement, the program, which was introduced by Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi and Joel Kaplan, Chief Global Affairs Officer of Meta, would function within the context of the government’s current “Jago Grahak Jago” (Wake Up Consumer) campaign.

“Consumer awareness is key to a sustainable and secure digital experience,” Joshi said at the launch event, adding that the collaboration would extend the department’s consumer protection efforts to remote areas of the country.

The collaborative effort will emphasize improving digital safety practices, including as creating strong passwords, checking online information, and reporting suspicious behavior, as well as teaching Indians how to identify online risks.

The minister also disclosed a different AI-powered initiative that was created in collaboration with IIT Bombay and backed by Meta during the launch.

“GrahakNyay” is a consumer-focused chatbot that uses Meta’s Llama 2 language model to increase access to consumer rights information and expedite the complaint filing procedure.

According to Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare, the chatbox would guarantee easy grievance settlement and complaint submission.

“At Meta, we think AI can help people protect themselves and be informed. By making AI more accessible, we hope to improve consumer awareness, streamline redressal processes, and equip people with the knowledge they need to make informed choices online,” Kaplan said.

The collaboration coincides with continuing initiatives by India’s consumer protection agencies to tackle new issues in the online market, such as deceptive advertising, unfair business practices, and the vulnerability of consumers in online transactions.
