India has made remarkable strides in enhancing its mobile internet speeds, significantly closing the performance gap with global leaders such as the United States and China. Between April and June 2025, India’s median mobile download speed surged to 136.53 Mbps, elevating the country to 26th globally—a substantial jump of 93 positions since September 2022.
This impressive progress is largely attributed to the accelerated rollout of 5G technology across the nation. 5G now accounts for over half of all telecom towers in India, with more than 326 million 5G subscribers as of March 2025.
While China currently leads with a median speed of 207.98 Mbps (ranked 8th) and the US stands at 176.75 Mbps (ranked 13th), India’s speed of 136.53 Mbps places it within striking distance of these digital powerhouses. Key drivers behind India’s rapid growth include an aggressive 5G expansion strategy, highly affordable data plans, substantial investments in digital infrastructure, and notably, high per capita data consumption, averaging 32 GB per month—a figure that surpasses both China and the US.
Despite these significant advancements, challenges persist, particularly in ensuring robust rural coverage and optimizing indoor connectivity. Continued investment in infrastructure will be crucial to sustain this momentum. This rapid improvement in mobile internet speeds underscores India’s broader digital transformation, positioning the nation increasingly closer to global leaders in digital connectivity.
