India has become the top country in the world for using Guided Learning, Google’s new Socratic AI tutoring feature built into Gemini. The company announced that more than two million Indian students now have free access to Google AI Pro through a special student offer, driving rapid adoption of the tool.
The Guided Learning feature uses Socratic-style questioning to help students think critically instead of giving direct answers. According to Google, 95% of student users in India reported feeling more confident in their learning after using Gemini.
India’s leadership in AI learning adoption is driven by its young demographic base. The country represents Google’s largest global user group of 18 to 24-year-olds on Search, making it a key region for testing educational AI tools. Indian students are using the platform in unique ways, engaging in longer, multi-turn conversations and exploring subjects in depth rather than seeking instant answers. They are also making strong use of multimodal learning, frequently uploading images of textbooks, diagrams, and exam questions for assistance.
Language flexibility has played a major role in Gemini’s success in India. Many students switch between Hindi and other regional languages within a single session. Currently, Google has made Gemini’s AI mode available in eight Indian languages and plans to expand this number soon.
The Guided Learning feature works as a personal tutor available at all times, assisting students across various subjects such as science, technology, mathematics, exam preparation, programming, and creative studies. Google has positioned the feature as a supportive learning tool that complements teachers rather than replacing them.
Alongside this, Google released a position paper detailing its vision for AI in education, focusing on learning science principles rather than direct-answer systems. The company has also developed a specialised language model, LearnLM, which powers these educational capabilities within Gemini.
