India launches Maha MedTech Mission to strengthen medical innovation

The Anusandhan National Research Foundation, in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research and the Gates Foundation, has launched the Maha MedTech Mission on October 25, 2025. The mission aims to strengthen India’s medical technology ecosystem by promoting innovation, reducing import dependence, and supporting affordable healthcare solutions for the country.

Under this initiative, milestone based funding will be offered between ₹5 crore and ₹25 crore per project, while exceptional proposals may receive up to ₹50 crore. Academic institutions, hospitals, startups, MSMEs, and MedTech companies are eligible to apply. Cross sector collaborations will be encouraged to drive faster development.

The mission focuses on three key goals. These include improving public health through priority disease technologies, ensuring affordability and access for patients, and increasing self reliance in medical device manufacturing.

The programme covers medical devices, implants, diagnostics, consumables, surgical tools, and software based healthcare solutions. It will also support emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics, and point of care diagnostics. Projects linked to national health priorities, including tuberculosis, cancer, neonatal care, and primary healthcare, will receive special focus.

Along with funding support, applicants will also receive assistance for intellectual property protection through Patent Mitra, regulatory support through MedTech Mitra, and clinical validation through a Clinical Trial Network. Industry mentorship will be provided to help accelerate product development.

The application process will take place in two stages. Concept Notes can be submitted from September 15 to November 7, 2025, on the official portal. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to submit full proposals starting December 2025.

The Maha MedTech Mission is expected to set a strong foundation for healthcare innovation in India by supporting impactful, indigenous medical solutions.
