In a major push to strengthen its artificial intelligence ecosystem, India has launched the Indian AI Research Organization, a new non-profit platform designed to accelerate domestic AI innovation through collaboration between government and industry.
Announced on January 30, 2026, the Indian AI Research Organization, or IAIRO, will operate under a 5-year mission backed by ₹300 crore in funding. The support comes from the Gujarat government, the central government, and the Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance.
Focus on real-world AI applications
IAIRO is focused on advancing AI research that delivers practical value in everyday life. Its priority areas include healthcare, education, climate change, and other critical sectors. The organization plans to build its own technology stack by combining local hardware with cloud-based infrastructure to develop AI models tailored specifically for India’s needs.
Clear targets and strong leadership
The initiative has set ambitious goals. Over the next 5 years, IAIRO aims to train more than 200 AI innovators, file over 50 patents, launch 30 or more pilot projects, support at least 20 startups, and reach over 10,000 students across the country.
Dr. Amit Sheth has been appointed as the Founding Director of IAIRO, while Dr. Ajai Chowdhry is part of its board. The organization is also supported by advisors from Google DeepMind and OpenAI.
Building partnerships for long-term impact
To strengthen India’s AI journey, IAIRO is partnering with institutions such as MeitY and the IndiaAI Mission. These collaborations will include targeted programs for entrepreneurs and investors, aimed at converting research into scalable solutions.
Through this initiative, IAIRO seeks to position India as a strong global AI contributor while creating meaningful opportunities for young talent in sectors that directly impact society.
