India a Key Tech Leader and Partner, Says German Envoy

German Ambassador to India, Philipp Ackermann, on Thursday described India as a “fabulous partner” and a global leader in technology. He noted that European companies are closely observing India’s progress, recognising its increasing influence in the global tech space.

In an interaction, the ambassador stressed the alignment of Indian and German goals, especially in semiconductor production. “Indian and German interests are very congruent. We want to have more share in the semiconductor production, and this is a great subject to discuss and compare notes,” he said.

He further added, “German companies are looking very closely at what happens in India as it is a world leader in technology and hence a fabulous partner.”

Ackermann also highlighted the importance of market stability in light of global trade challenges. Commenting on current tariff disputes, he said, “The German government’s stance is clear: we need stability in the market, not erratic behaviour. Therefore, it is high time the European Union and India sit together and agree on the Free Trade Agreement, which will be a game changer for many industries.”

Addressing the impact of US policies, the ambassador remarked, “Germany and the European Union have been impacted as well by the American tariff policies and now we have to cope with the situation… and India must be looking at the situation and how to cope with it.”

He also expressed optimism about progress in trade relations. “Once the EU-India summit sets up, which is early next year, we will be able to have a draft agreement,” he said.

Recently, US President Trump announced a 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods and an unspecified penalty for buying oil from Russia. These tariffs are expected to come into effect from August 1.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, India and Germany, the world’s fifth and third largest economies respectively, enjoy a strong economic and developmental partnership. Both countries support democratic values, multilateralism and reform of global institutions. They have also agreed on the need to enhance cooperation in defence and security to meet shared global challenges.
