India has taken a major step in modernising travel documents with the launch of the e Passport. The new passport uses digital technology to improve security and simplify international travel. It includes a small electronic chip that stores encrypted personal and biometric information, aligning India with global travel document standards.
The e Passport looks similar to a regular Indian passport but contains an electronic chip embedded in the back cover. This chip securely holds details such as the holder’s photograph, fingerprints, facial recognition data and other personal information. The data is protected through strong encryption, making it extremely difficult to copy or tamper with.
The main objective of the e Passport is to reduce identity theft and passport fraud while enabling smoother and quicker verification at immigration counters across the world.
Any Indian citizen who is eligible for a regular passport can apply for an e Passport. This includes first time applicants as well as those renewing their passports. Currently, the service is available at select Passport Seva Kendras and Post Office Passport Seva Kendras across the country. Applicants are advised to check whether their nearest centre supports e Passports before applying.
The application process remains largely unchanged. Applicants must register or log in on the official Passport Seva portal, fill in the online application form for a new passport or renewal, pay the required fee and book an appointment. During the visit to the selected centre, applicants need to submit documents and provide biometric data such as fingerprints and photographs. Once approved, the e Passport is delivered to the applicant’s address.
The application fees are the same as those for regular passports. A 36 page booklet costs Rs. 1,500, while a 60 page booklet costs Rs. 2,000. Additional charges may apply for Tatkal or faster processing services.
The e Passport offers several benefits. It provides stronger security through encrypted data, allows faster immigration checks using automated systems, and meets international standards, improving global acceptance. This move marks an important upgrade in India’s travel infrastructure and enhances safety and convenience for travellers.
