India has introduced e-passports with integrating electronic features

India has implemented e-passports, which are already accessible in several Indian cities, in an effort to enhance security and identification procedures globally. This is a big step toward modernizing and expanding the travel documentation procedure. According to sources, the new e-passports combine technological capabilities with the layout of conventional passport booklets.

The Passport Seva Programme (PSP) Version 2.0 includes the rollout of e-passports as part of a larger initiative. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, this procedure already took into effect on April 1, 2024.

What does e-passports contain?

The new e-passport reportedly has an inbuilt Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip and an antenna built right in. Both of these are covered by the passport. The holder’s biometric and personal information may be safely stored thanks to its sophisticated design. The gold emblem on the front cover is what sets e-passports apart from traditional ones. The Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), which guarantees the validity of the data saved on the chip, is the main element of this technology. Additionally, PKI guards against identity fraud, confirms data quality, and helps stop unauthorized access.

Some of the prime benefits of e-passports are:
High degree of data security The integrated chip reduces the possibility of identity theft, forgeries, and manipulation. beneficial for enhancing the effectiveness and dependability of identification checks when traveling abroad Important personal data and biometric identifiers are stored on the secure chip, making them harder to copy or change.
