India’s developer ecosystem is witnessing rapid growth, with a sharp rise in the number of programmers joining global coding platforms.
According to GitHub, India now has 27 million developers on the platform, up from 21.9 million just 6 months ago. This makes India the fastest-growing developer community globally. With over 180 million developers worldwide, GitHub is relying on India to help achieve its target of reaching 1 billion developers by 2030.
The growth is being driven by AI-powered tools like GitHub Copilot, which are making coding faster and more efficient. The company’s Chief Operating Officer, Kyle Daigle, highlighted that AI-assisted development is significantly transforming how developers work.
GitHub is also expanding its efforts at the grassroots level. It is organising local meetups and partnering with colleges to help students gain practical experience in open-source projects.
These initiatives are part of Microsoft’s broader strategy to grow the global developer community. The company is focusing on engagement through campus experts, community events, and hackathons in collaboration with organisations like Infosys, Hack Club, and the Student Developer Pack program.
This combined push of AI tools, community building, and academic partnerships is accelerating India’s role in the global developer ecosystem.
