India explores sovereign GPU roadmap in talks with NVIDIA leadership

Amid India’s growing focus on building a strong domestic AI ecosystem, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently met senior NVIDIA officials to discuss the development of a sovereign graphics processing unit and the local manufacturing of high-end data processing devices.

The discussions centred on strengthening India’s AI infrastructure as NVIDIA continues to hold over 80 per cent of the global GPU market, with its chips widely used for artificial intelligence development worldwide. The meeting reflects India’s intent to reduce reliance on external technology while expanding local capabilities in advanced computing.

Sharing details of the interaction on X, Vaishnaw said, “Met NVIDIA team and discussed development of sovereign GPUs and manufacturing of edge devices like DGX Spark in Bharat. This device delivers up to 1 petaFLOP performance with secure inferencing for models up to 200 billion parameters. This compact GPU doesn’t require the Internet. Suitable for railways, shipping, healthcare, education and remote applications.” He also shared a photograph with NVIDIA’s Managing Director for South Asia, Vishal Dhupar.

The conversation follows NVIDIA’s recent unveiling of DGX Spark and DGX Station deskside AI supercomputers at CES, and aligns closely with India’s broader artificial intelligence goals. These systems are designed to bring powerful AI computing closer to real-world and edge use cases.

Vaishnaw has earlier stated that India is targeting the development of its own GPU within 3 to 4 years. At the same time, the government continues to support access to advanced computing under the India AI Mission. So far, 38,000 GPUs have been deployed through subsidies, and 12 startups have received backing to build native AI engines.

Together, these efforts underline India’s push to build self-reliance in AI hardware and infrastructure while supporting innovation across critical sectors.
