India crosses 2 lakh government recognised startups, says Union minister Piyush Goyal

India is now home to more than 2 lakh government recognised startups, with over 44000 entities recognised in the current year alone. This marks the highest annual addition since the launch of the Startup India initiative in 2016, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Friday.

Under the Startup India programme, recognised startups are eligible for multiple incentives, including income tax relief, aimed at supporting early stage growth and innovation.

Highlighting the social and economic impact of the initiative, Goyal said, “What makes this success sweeter is that nearly 48% of these startups have at least one woman director/partner. These startups have also helped generate over 2100000 direct jobs,” in a social media post.

The minister also shared details of funding support extended through government backed schemes. According to him, over Rs 25320 crore has been invested in more than 1350 startups by Alternative Investment Funds under the Fund of Funds for Startups Scheme.

In addition, Rs 775 crore has been granted under the Credit Guarantee Scheme for Startups. He further noted that over Rs 585 crore has been approved for more than 3200 startup applications through incubators under the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme.

Innovation activity among startups has also seen a sharp rise. So far this year, more than 16400 new patent applications have been filed by startups, reflecting a growing focus on intellectual property creation and technology driven solutions.

The latest figures underline the scale and diversity of India startup ecosystem, as it continues to generate jobs, attract capital, and encourage participation from women entrepreneurs across sectors.
