Away from the spotlight, Alphabet is preparing a major push to grow its operations in India, signalling a deeper shift of global tech work toward the country.

According to a news report citing people familiar with the matter, Google’s parent company is planning to significantly expand its presence in Bengaluru. The company has already leased 1 office tower and secured options on 2 more at Alembic City in Whitefield, one of the city’s key technology corridors. Together, the planned space totals about 2.4 million square feet.

The first office tower is expected to open to employees in the coming months. Construction of the remaining 2 towers is scheduled to be completed next year. If Alphabet occupies the entire complex, it could house up to 20,000 additional employees. This would more than double the company’s current footprint in India.

Alphabet currently employs around 14,000 people in the country, compared with a global workforce of roughly 190,000, as per the report. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment from a news agency.

The expansion plans come at a time when US immigration policies are becoming more restrictive. President Donald Trump’s administration has tightened scrutiny of H-1B visas and introduced measures that increase the cost of hiring foreign talent. New H-1B visa applications now reportedly cost $100,000, up from an earlier range of $2,000 to $5,000.

Alphabet is among the largest sponsors of H-1B visas, based on US government data. The higher costs and stricter rules are adding pressure on US companies that rely heavily on skilled international workers. This shift could accelerate the movement of critical technology roles to countries like India.

India is already emerging as a preferred destination for global operations. According to TeamLease Services, the country could host more than 2,400 global capability centers by 2030.

With access to a large talent pool and growing infrastructure, India appears well placed to benefit as global tech firms reassess where they build and scale their workforces.
