India becomes central to global digital growth as new age GCCs evolve

India is becoming a major force in global digital transformation as new age Global Capability Centres shift from traditional support roles to leading innovation for multinational companies. A recent industry report said these centres are now critical to how global enterprises modernise and compete.

There are more than 1760 GCCs operating in India, employing nearly 1.9 million professionals. These centres support the digital infrastructure of almost half of the Fortune 500 companies. The report, created with the help of consulting partners, notes that close to 70 per cent of new GCCs set up across Asia are choosing India.

This rise is driven by the India’s strong talent pool, expanding deep tech ecosystem, strong service provider partnerships and growing focus on design led thinking.

The study stated that the GCC model is now entering an important phase. It said, “The GCC model is entering a pivotal phase, demanding deep partnerships and rapid movement to leverage these centers as primary engines of innovation, resilience, and enterprise value. For India, the next decade of global digital progress will be built on partnership models architected in India, where GCCs and service providers jointly define how enterprises grow, innovate, and compete.”

The report highlights a new operating approach for next generation GCCs that depends on strong partnerships between headquarters, GCCs and technology service providers. These partnerships are built as connected ecosystems where teams co create, operate and expand capabilities together. Flexible models such as Build Operate Transfer Manage, Joint Ventures, Modern Talent Augmentation and Co Innovation Partnerships are becoming more common as companies push for faster and large scale transformation. This shift shows a growing expectation that GCCs must now lead innovation, deliver profit impact and create independent value in a rapidly advancing artificial intelligence environment.

To help organisations succeed in this changing space, the report lists five key pillars. These include a shared vision, excellence in operations, strong governance, the ability to attract top talent and innovation driven by technology.

For service providers, the report said the focus must be on deeper involvement and greater agility. This includes building specialised talent, strengthening their value proposition and updating operating models so they can act as long term partners that deliver measurable business outcomes.
