Highlighting India’s growing influence in artificial intelligence, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the country is not only developing new technologies but also adopting them at speed. He made the remarks while addressing the India AI Impact Summit being held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi from February 16 to 20.
Describing the gathering as the world’s biggest and historic AI impact summit, Modi welcomed global leaders and industry executives. He noted that India has the largest youth population, a vast pool of technology talent, and a strong tech-enabled ecosystem. “Artificial intelligence marks a transformative chapter in human history. India is not just a part of the AI revolution, but is leading and shaping it,” he said.
Speaking about responsible innovation, he added, “AI is a transformative power; if it strays away from its goals, it will lead to destruction, and if used well, it will give solutions.” He stressed that the key question today is not what AI can achieve in the future, but how it can be used effectively in the present.
The Prime Minister emphasised the need to democratise AI so that it becomes a tool for inclusion and empowerment, especially for the Global South. “To ensure that humans do not become a data point or raw material, we have to democratise AI. Welfare and happiness of all is our benchmark for AI,” he said.
During the address, Modi introduced the ‘MANAV Vision’ framework for AI governance. According to him, “MANAV” stands for Moral and Ethical System, Accountable Governance, National Sovereignty, Accessible and Inclusive, and Valid and Legitimate. He said AI models successful in India can be deployed globally and added, “Some people fear AI, some see the future in it. India sees future in AI, he mentioned.
He also proposed authenticity labels for AI-generated content, similar to nutrition labels on food packaging.
Global leaders attending the summit included French President Emmanuel Macron, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Disanayaka, Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, Croatia Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, Seychelles Vice President Sebastien Pillay, Estonia President Alar Karis, and Finland Prime Minister Petteri Orpo.
