India and Jordan strengthen partnership across diplomacy, economy and technology

A long history of goodwill continues to guide the steadily growing relationship between India and Jordan, with cooperation expanding across politics, trade, technology, education and culture.

The foundation of bilateral ties dates back to 1947, when the first agreement for cooperation and friendly relations was signed. Full diplomatic relations were formalised in 1950. Since then, consistent political engagement and people focused initiatives have shaped a broad and stable partnership.

High level exchanges have played a key role in deepening ties. In October 2015, President Ram Nath Kovind became the first Indian Head of State to visit Jordan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s transit visit to Amman in February 2018, where he was received by King Abdullah II at his private residence, reflected close leadership level rapport. The Jordanian monarch later paid a state visit to India from February 27 to March 01, 2018. During this visit, both sides signed 12 MoUs and agreements and India announced support for a Centre of Excellence in Information Technology in Jordan along with in kind assistance for pharmaceuticals and vaccines worth USD 5 million.

Political coordination has continued through National Security Adviser Ajit Doval’s visit in January 2020, regular ministerial interactions and the 4th round of Foreign Office Consultations held in Amman in April 2025. Cooperation has also expanded in health, pharmaceuticals and digital health through Joint Working Groups.

Economic engagement is a major pillar of the relationship. India is Jordan’s 4th largest trading partner, with bilateral trade valued at USD 2.875 billion in 2023 to 2024. Indian exports stood at USD 1.465 billion, while imports included phosphates, fertilisers and phosphoric acid. Indian investments of around USD 1.5 billion are concentrated in phosphates and textiles. The IFFCO and Jordan Phosphate Mines Company joint venture JIFCO remains a flagship project.

Science and technology ties have gained momentum with the India Jordan Centre of Excellence in Information Technology at Al Hussein Technical University, inaugurated in October 2021. Fully funded by India, the centre aims to train nearly 3,000 professionals in cybersecurity, AI and data analytics. Jordan also benefits from ITEC and ICCR programmes, with 50 ITEC slots now allocated annually.

People to people ties remain vibrant. Around 2,500 Jordanian alumni have studied in India, while about 500 students are currently enrolled. Cultural exchanges thrive through film shoots, festivals and yoga events. Around 17,500 Indians live and work in Jordan across multiple sectors.

With expanding cooperation across sectors, India and Jordan continue to build a forward looking partnership focused on shared growth and regional stability.
