India aims to lead 6G and promises a network 100 times faster to revolutionize communications

With the government announcing that 6G will be “100 times more powerful” than 5G and usher in a new age of intelligent, ultra-fast connection, India has set its eyes on being the global leader in sixth-generation (6G) technology.

The nation’s path and goal to dominate the 6G sector by the end of the decade were outlined by Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications, during his speech at the “Bharat 6G 2025 International Conference and Exhibition” on Wednesday.

Dr. Pemmasani emphasized the revolutionary potential of 6G in an interview with Media, characterizing it as a whole regeneration of digital infrastructure. “5G has already been hugely successful in expanding connectivity, but 6G will be a completely different network — 100 times more powerful, with latency reduced to sub-milliseconds,” he said.

While 5G allowed digital solutions like village Wi-Fi networks and provided high-speed internet to rural places, the minister pointed out that 6G will go far further, driven by intelligent networks, terahertz communication, and artificial intelligence. He asserts that 6G is more than simply a speedier network; it will be intricately linked with AI and have the power to revolutionize industries including manufacturing, healthcare, education, and agriculture.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi initially stated India’s goal to be a leader in 6G in March 2023. International collaborations, incentives for innovation, and the creation of global standards are all part of the plan. Important partnerships are already in place with nations like Finland, Singapore, and Japan.

“While the shift from 4G to 5G was significant, the move to 6G will be transformational,” Dr Pemmasani remarked. He emphasized that while early adopters could be the only ones using 6G at first, the technology would eventually become widely used, just like its predecessors did.

An essential component of this process is the Bharat 6G 2025 conference, which provides a forum for business executives, scholars, and legislators to share ideas and provide the groundwork for worldwide 6G innovation.

The minister also admitted that there are difficulties with the present 5G deployment, especially with regard to increasing data needs and spectrum availability. “These are natural growing pains with any evolving technology,” he said, while voicing assurance that the knowledge gained from 5G will help create a more reliable and effective 6G deployment.

6G is being positioned as a driver for economic and societal progress rather than merely a technological breakthrough. The administration views 6G as a catalyst for inclusive growth, Dr. Pemmasani said. “From rural healthcare access to smart farming solutions and immersive digital learning, the potential of 6G is enormous,” he noted.

The government is currently concentrating on developing an innovation ecosystem that supports domestic entrepreneurs, stimulates scholarly research, and provides incentives for private sector involvement. The drive for 6G is in line with India’s overarching goal of becoming a global digital powerhouse and influencing communication technologies in its own way.

India’s dedication to laying the groundwork, forming international partnerships, and fostering innovation may position it in the front of the upcoming digital revolution as the global competition for 6G picks up speed. 6G promises to revolutionize not just how individuals connect, but also how businesses and societies develop through AI-enabled networks and smooth real-time communication.
